Chapter 20

Friday 17th May 1799

“GEORGIANA, I must show you this. It is a letter from Jane. I know it is her writing. It is addressed to us both so we must read it together. Would you like to come to my room?”

“Yes indeed, Caroline. It is rather too cool out here to sit and read a letter.”

Caroline was clearly very excited and anxious to see what Jane had written but had not opened the letter yet. She had tracked Georgiana down to the garden taking the air. The ladies hurried indoors and up the stairs. On gaining Caroline’s room, they took seats opposite one another. Caroline was examining the sealed letter thoughtfully.

“I think she has enclosed something. It feels thicker. Shall I open it or would you like to? I am almost too full of anticipation. I do hope they can come to the wedding.”

“Very well. I will open it.”

Georgiana took it and pulled the seal apart. Another folded piece of paper fell out and Caroline bent to retrieve it.

“Oh,” she said, unfolding the mystery enclosure. “’Tis from…” She quickly passed her eyes to the foot of it. “’Tis a letter to Jane from Lydia, I think. Written in a hurry by the look of it.”

She raised her head. “But read Jane’s first if you would be so kind, dear Georgiana. I am all of a dither to know whether Charles will be here to give me away.”

“Yes, of course.” Georgiana looked down. “It is dated Wednesday. She says:

“My Dearest Caroline and Georgiana,

We are vastly delighted to hear of your engagement, Caroline. It is most unexpected to us as you may imagine but a most happy event for you and for our family. We are full of anticipation to see you and to meet Mr Davers. It is such exciting news. Charles of course sends his most heart-felt congratulations and is quite overcome with joy for you, as am I.

Charles and I are desirous of seeing you as soon as may be possible and propose to travel to London the week before your wedding. Charles has already sent word for us to be expected at South Street on Monday 20th inst. or Tuesday, but Monday I hope. I can scarcely believe this sudden change. I hope you will not object that I have written to my Aunt Gardiner at Gracechurch Street to tell her of our arrival and your forthcoming marriage. I am sure that she will wish to meet us and to meet you and Mr Davers. I feel sure that an invitation will be received for us to dine at Gracechurch Street soon after we have arrived.

But I have been dilatory in replying to your urgent and principal requests for Charles to give you away, Caroline, and for your honeymoon to be spent at Netherfield. The answer is of course a firm confirmation on both heads and a suite of rooms in the east wing at Netherfield is being made ready for you.
